| What
is Moodle? |
Moodle (Modular
Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source course management
system. It is designed for creating and managing high quality, interactive online courses. It is extremely
popular and used by many universities, colleges, schools, companies, private
training institutes and government departments around the world. Few examples
of institutions currently using Moodle include University
of Louisiana,
California State University,
Open
University, University
of Glasgow,
Yeovil College and Kings Primary School etc.
Others are Wolverhampton
County Council, Bournemouth
Lifelong Learning, to name just a few.
Moodle-based VLE is flexible, scalable, and open-ended, capable of accommodating a wide
range of users from a single-teacher site to a 50,000-student University.
Being an open source software, you can download, use, modify and even distribute
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Further details are
available on moodle.org.
Although Moodle is free to download, implementing and getting it 'up and running' can be a daunting experience for most organisations as some technical expertise is required. This is where can help. |

Requirements for Moodle Installation |
Moodle implementation requires a web server, a server operating system,
PHP web application language (usually handled by the web server program)
and a database to store the courses and user information. It also requires
enormous amount of server disk space over the capacity needed to store
the Moodle program itself to enable course creators to upload resources
(such as world documents, PowerPoint, images, sound and video files, web
pages, etc.) for use in their courses.
Other Required Hardware and Software:
- A server machine with the following recommended specifications: A minimum
of 1GHz processor
- 512MB RAM (more would be preferable)
- A minimum of 50MB of disk space for the Moodle installation and about 200MB disk space for uploaded resources and the database (for a small installation with just a few teachers and learners)
- Fast disks for good database performance
- A network interface, with a connection to the network on which your learners' workstations are situated
- A backup device. You could back up to tape, or CD-R or DVD-R, or across the network to another server. This is an essential requirement to ensure that your database and Moodle files are backed-up regularly in an event of a server failure
Server Operating System: Any of the following would suffice
- Linux (Red Hat / Fedora Core / Mandrake, etc.)
- Windows NT / 2000 Server / 2003 Server
- Apple OSX
- Sun Solaris
- Various versions of Unix, ensuring that an appropriate web server and database is available
Web Servers:
- Web server Apache 1.3.x and 2.x.x
- Microsoft IIS5 or IIS6
- Any other web server service that can run PHP
Database Management System:
- MYSQL: Please check for the current recommended version on Moodle website
- PostgresQL
You may need a graphical user interface to manage these database applications, e.g. PHPMYADMIN
